Clinical Characteristics of Male Inpatients with Alcohol Dependence in a Alcoholism Ward

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives£º This study aimed to obtain the demographic and clinical characteristics of male inpatients with alcohol dependence in the alcoholism ward of a mental hospital.
Methods£º The subjects were 113 patients who met the DSM-IV criteria for alcohol dependence. They completed the questionnaires that consisted of the demographic and drinking-related characteristics and AUDIT-K, HAIS, BDI.
Results£º The average age of the subjects was 48.58 years. High school graduation was most common. Among the study subjects, 33.6% had no religion, 54% had a very low income, 40.7% required medical aid, only 47.8% were married, 56.6% were jobless, 90.3% were smokers, and 29.2% had been admitted voluntarily. The first age of drinking was 20.26 years and the amount of drinking per day was 2.51 bottles using 360cc Soju. 85.8% preferred soju. 38.1% had attended AA and 40.7% had binge pattern of drinking. The mean AUDIT-K score of the subjects was 23.07, HAIS score was 7.39 and BDI score was 18.54. The group with a higher AUDIT-K score had the higher HAIS score, was younger and started to drink earlier. However we could not find any correlation between BDI and other factors.
Conclusion£º These results show the latest information about the demographic and clinical characteristics
of male inpatients with alcohol dependence. Therefore various treatment programs based on these results should
be established.
